The Downtown Run &
The New Bedford Half Marathon

NEW BEDFORD

Downtown New Bedford Inc. & The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick present Marathon Weekend. The fourth annual Downtown Run, held in conjunction with the 35th annual New Bedford Half Marathon, will be held on Sunday, March 18th from 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm.  Click here for sign-up form.

Last year’s third effort was successful and proved that we could keep the runners and their family and friends in the downtown by giving them plenty to do and see. DNB, Inc. will once again be organizing this event and produce a

brochure/map guiding visitors to the participating businesses to eat, drink, shop. The “scavenger hunt” style event was enjoyable for families and “kids” of all ages getting their map stamped from at least half the businesses allows participants to win great prizes.

Some of the changes that the New Bedford Half Marathon Committee made kept more people both pre and post race in the downtown. The field of runners this year is expected to reach 35,000 with this being the 35th Anniversary of the race. This means Downtown New Bedford will host a combined audience of runners and spectators that could reach 50,000 people!

Music at St. Anthony's

NEW BEDFORD

Music st St. Anthony's showcases Gail Archer, International Recital Organist. If you missed last year’s performance, you should know that on Sunday, March 11th at 3:00 pm, Gail Archer will return to perform an organ recital in the Music at St. Anthony's program. Ms. Archer has a special gift for matching the instrument – St. Anthony’s great pipe organ – to the outstanding acoustical qualities of the beautiful wood frame and plaster interior of the church. As an internationally renowned concert musician, she has honed her talents at the keyboard of many different organs around the world, and last year provided a program of rich and melodious music.

The recital is at St. Anthony of Padua church in New Bedford’s North End.  The recital is part of the fundraising series for the restoration of the nearly 100 year old instrument.  Complimentary tea and refreshments are served after the recital at a reception to meet the organist in the church hall. Freewill donations are collected during the event, and patrons are encouraged to “Adopt an Organ Part” to help the fundraising. For more information, please call the rectory at 508-993-1691.  Directions and information about the Church and the organ fund are posted on their website.

Book Signing by Local Author

SWANSEA

Local author Robert M. Clark will visit the Swansea Public Library on Wednesday, March 7th, at 7:00 p.m. for a book signing and talk on his new book, “Dizzy Miss Lizzie.”

The book is about 13-old Kasey Madrid, who finally has the freedom she’s always wanted. Instead of putting up with sitters or camps, she can spend the summer home alone in their “new” house. Never mind that the house is a creepy old place built in the nineteenth century.

The creep factor skyrockets when Kasey meets a 19th-century girl named Lizzie Bellows in the basement. It takes some time for Lizzie to convince Kasey she’s not a ghost, though neither girl understands why they can see each other when they live 120 years apart.

R. M. Clark is a computer scientist for the Department of the Navy by day and children’s book writer by night. He lives in Swansea with his wife and two sons. His house, not coincidentally, is just down the street from Lizzie

Borden’s former summer home, which provided the inspiration for his debut novel, “Dizzy Miss Lizzie,” published by Stanley Publishing. He has penned seven books and is currently at work on his latest.

For more information and to register, contact the library at 508-674-9609.
