The Star Spangled Girl

FALL RIVER

Little Theatre of Fall River presents Neil Simon's The Star Spangled Girl at “The Fire Barn," 340 Prospect Street, Fall River, MA.

This fast moving, hilarious comedy written by Neil Simon, deals with two earnest young men struggling to put out a magazine and the all-American girl who moves in next door and manages to send both of them into a romantic tail spin.

WESTPORT

The Greater New Bedford Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA) invites professional women within the community to attend their monthly meeting on Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at White’s of Westport. The meeting will begin with networking from 5:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. followed by dinner and then a speaker.  The cost is $25 per person.

The Greater New Bedford Chapter of the ABWA is pleased to introduce their September speakers as Alan and Joy Freitas of Priority Management. Together, they will present “Organize or Agonize… Getting back in Control of your Life” which is a dynamic, interactive, informative and entertaining look at the busy business people of today.

FAIRHAVEN

Join Community Nurse & Hospice Care for the Walk, Rock and Roll at The Royal to raise money for hospice care. The 3 mile walk will take place on Sunday, September 19th from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm (rain or shine) and will start at The Royal of Fairhaven, 184 Main Street, Fairhaven, MA. and will weave through historic Poverty Point in Fairhaven, highlighting colonial points of interest along the way. It will end back at The Royal, where everyone will gather under the tent to enjoy live entertainment by Blu Lobsta, refreshments, and foot massages by Julie Rose on the grounds of their newly-renovated facility. In addition, youth activities such as face painting and animal balloons will be offered.

All registered walkers raising $50 or more will receive an Official 2010 Walk, Rock & Roll at The Royal t-shirt. Awards will be given out to the team with the most spirit and the individual and team who have the highest pledge totals. Click here to download the Walker Pledge Sheet. Walk 4 Animals

FALL RIVER

The 19th annual “Walk 4 Animals” will be held on Sunday, September 19th at Heritage State Park, Fall River. The event will include refreshments and give aways for all walkers, entertainment, doggie contests, demonstrations, exhibitors and vendors. Registration for the walk will begin at 9 a.m. rain or shine.

The kick-off activities will commence at 10 a.m. with a blessing of the animals. This year’s honorary walk chairman is Mayor Will Flanagan. Hector Gauthier of WSAR will emcee the festivities.

People may walk with or without their pets. All proceeds from the Walk 4 Animals will benefit animals in the care of Faxon Animal Shelter at 474 Durfee St. Participants can walk individually or as a team. The top fundraisers in both the adult and junior categories will receive prizes. The top “pack” (team walkers) will receive a special prize.

Pre-registration is recommended. Participants do not need to be pet owners. Walkers can raise additional dollars if their employers have a matching gift program. Charity Event


DARTMOUTH

Sgt. Ferreira was critically injured by a suicide bomber on March 9, 2010 while serving our nation in Afghanistan. Facing months of recovery a fundraiser has been organized to help raise money for medical bills.

The event is being held at the Dartmouth Holy Ghost Grounds, Allens Neck Road, Dartmouth on Saturday, September 25th from 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Rain date is the 26th. Enjoy  the comedy of Steve Lopes, The Portuguese Fireman. Music by Outer Limits Band & Bob's Better Daze, cook out consisting of hamburgers, hot dogs, Chinese Auction. Grand prizes: Raffle to win club seats and VIP parking for the N.E. Patriots! Samsung 55' 1080P 120HZ HDTV and $500.00 cash.

Dartmouth Summer
Concert Series


DARTMOUTH

 
Dartmouth Summer Concerts are held every Wednesday from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at Apponagansett Park on Gulf Road near the Padanaram Bridge.

The concerts run, weather permitting, through September 29th. Rain days are Thursday evenings.
  
Gate opens at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $5.00 per person at the gate, $4.00 per person in advance. Children under 12 free. Season passes are available for $30.00 per person Classic Car passes are $25.00 per vehicle. Go to the Calendar Page for the full schedule.

Meet the Candidates

WESTPORT

The Westport Democratic Town Committee is hosting a Come Meet the Candidates Night on September 2, 2010 from 6:00 - 8:00 pm at White’s of Westport. The purpose of the event is to give the public an opportunity to get to know the Democratic candidates for all offices in the upcoming November state primary elections. Each candidate will make a brief presentation and there will be time for questions and answers. Congressman Jim McGovern will be the featured speaker for the event. Lt. Governor Tim Murray will also be attending as a special guest.

Reservations for the event are required. There will be a varied menu of hors d’oeuvres available. Tickets are $25.00 and can be reserved by calling Cindy Rodrigues, the Chairperson of the Democratic Town Committee at 508-675-2869 or Secretary Liz Collins at 508-636-6322.

New Bedford Seaport Chowderfest


On September 12, from 12:00 to 4:00 pm, you can sample the offerings of Clam Chowder, Seafood Chowder, Kale Soup and Stuffed Quahogs, from more than 20 area restaurant at the 5th annual New Bedford Chowder Festival all included in the price of your admission ticket.  To date the following have registered to participate:

17th Annual Westport
"Rock, Rhythm & Blues Festival"

To benefit A Wish Come True

The Festival kicks off Friday night, September 10th at 6:00 with a chicken BBQ and Bluegrass Night music until 10:00 pm.

The gates open at noon on Saturday and Sunday. A $10 donation gets you in to enjoy the music, kids under 12 are FREE!  Bring your own chairs, enjoy food from the concession stands or pack a picnic and toss out a blanket. For more information, or to volunteer, call (508) 493-0915.

7th Annual "Rock, Rhythm & Blues" Motorcycle Run will be held Saturday, September. The ride will start at Dave's Beach, Jefferson Street, Fall River, MA. and end at Holy Ghost Grounds, Westport, MA.

Registration opens at 9:00 am and will run until 11:00 am - what a blast, and what a sight to see!  Rain date for the motorcycle run will be Sunday, September 12th.

FALL RIVER

Walk A Mile In My Shoes, the Third Annual Friends of the Poor® Walk, will help neighbors in need on Saturday, September. 25th.  Registration will start at 8:30 a.m. and the walk will start at 10 a.m., at Kennedy Park, South Main Street at Bradford Avenue, Fall River.

Pledges made on behalf of registered walkers in the greater Fall River area will benefit those most in need in the local area.

The Fall River District of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul encourages all to participate in the Friends of the Poor® Walk locally -- as walkers, pledgers, volunteers, or all three. To register as a walker, to pledge support for a walker, or for more information, view their flyer. To volunteer, call Lou Yokell at 508-642-3440.

Last year’s funds were used to support five area soup kitchens and 10 food pantries. Aid was provided to individuals and families with help in meeting financial emergencies and also met an urgent need for mattresses and bedding for over 75 clients.
